Remembering Dr Leach
We are sad to be sharing news of the death of a dear friend and colleague, Dr Matthew Leach, who died last Monday 10th May. Matthew had been ill for some time and died, peacefully, surrounded by his family.
Dr Leach was appointed Head of Physics at Manchester High School for Girls in September 2013. He later became a Higher Education Adviser and was subsequently appointed to the role of Assistant Head, Director of Co-Curriculum, as a member of the Senior Leadership Team in September 2017.
He began his career working in industry and, thankfully for us, transferred to teaching. He always considered it a privilege to support the pupils under his care and was passionate about his subject and the MHSG community.
Head Mistress, Mrs Jeys, said, “He will be remembered by us all for the impact he had on our school and the lives of those pupils and staff who knew and respected him so much. He was an exceptionally intelligent man with a wonderful sense of humour and an energy that - seemingly - knew no bounds. He was compassionate, caring and always willing to support colleagues and pupils; he was a wonderful friend to many and we will miss him hugely.”
She continued, “His infectious laugh and booming voice will never leave us, nor will we forget the tales of his trips abroad and the time he spent living in Italy. The loudest table in the staff dining room would always be Matthew’s as he talked, joked and laughed with colleagues.”
Dr Leach was a popular colleague and the sign he chose for his door appropriately noted, ‘It’s fun, then it’s done.’
In due course, we will have a memorial in school to remember Dr Leach and to celebrate the legacy he has left Manchester High School for Girls. Anyone wishing to share their memories of him, should email [email protected]
